SUZANNE WOODS-COLEMAN MASTER HERBALISTSHIATSU PRACTITIONER Suzanne has been brought up in the tradition of Herbal Medicine, her family have been practising Medical Herbalists and Natural Healers for 5 or more generations. Suzanne was raised in New Zealand where her grandfather had an herbal manufacturing laboratory as well as a thriving herbal and massage clinic. Her mother followed on in the same tradition as her father, grandmother and great-grandmother. Suzanne has inherited this wealth of Herbal Lore not only from her family but also from her mentor, a Medical Herbalist with a similar healing-family background. With this lifelong association and knowledge Suzanne has raised her own children, in the same tradition, without the use of modern drug-medicine and practises. Acutely aware of the ills of the modern world and knowing how these destroy life and wellbeing (physically, emotionally and spiritually), Suzanne sought her path to help heal, where the need appears the greatest, here in the United States. The temptations of life in this modern world and the destructive forces that people are now sub-jected to, has caused an immense amount of suffering. The cure would seem to lie in a reconnection with the traditions of the past, not to forsake the good advancements of the modern world, but to bring a more open perspective and understanding. The inherent inner strength, given by a family that has always stood for truth, be it the popular voice or not, made it easy for Suzanne to take up the healing path. Following her early introduction to herbal medicine, she went on to study at the National Institiute for Medical Herbalists in Britain. Later serving an apprenticeship with her mentor Desmond Eggleton in New Zealand. She has inherited and been given a library of proven herbal formulas. During her apprenticeship, Suzanne learned the art of formulating for individuals, to see the uniqueness in everyone and to match their need with the appropriate herbs. The interplay of body, mind, emotion and spirit in the healing process is well known to Suzanne and is always foremost in her mind when seeking the healing process for someone. Suzanne has both taught herbal medicine and run a very successful natural healing clinic in New Zealand for over 15 years. She was instrumental in the establishment and ongoing success of organizations for the promotion of natural healing in New Zealand. Her quest to further advance the cause and truth in medicine, on a global perspective, has brought her to the United States. |

DAVID KUKKOLA SHIATSU MASTERHERBALIST David has spent the past 25 years studying the relationship of the body, mind and spirit and how they present themselves in healing and in disease. Being raised in Montana and then raising his family in the North west on the Suquamish Indian Reservation created the foundation for his intimate connection with nature and life. With that knowledge, he knew that there was something intrinsically wrong with modernity and that the traditional ways of our ancestors had to be called forward. In light of all the advancements technology has given us in the form of comfort, an equal destructive energy has accompanied it. The practices of the indigenous peoples resonated more closely to what he was feeling within himself: The need for a village, not nuclear families; the need for the story of our elders, not rest homes; the need for healing the disease, not suppressing the symptoms; the need for each other, not the loneliness and abandonment we are all suffering from; the need for ritual and initiation celebrating and honoring the different phases of life, not the denial that has masked us from our ancient origins. It was that inner voice that led him to the healing arts. In 1983 he studied in Japan with Shiatsu Master, Tokujiro Namikoshi, while living in a Buddhist temple. The art of Kanpo, "the old way", was revealed to him. The practice of natural healing was slowly learned, using meditation, diet, exercise, herbs and body therapy. Diagnostic tools were given him; face diagnosis, tongue and pulse diagnosis, the spirit of the voice and eyes. More deeply, he was shown the connection of all of life and taught the art of listening. In listening to someone's story the interplay of health and disease would be revealed and the opportunity for healing made possible. He apprenticed with two Chinese herbal doctors for five years and built a highly reputable natural healing clinic in the Bay area. Thousands of clients have passed through his clinic over the past 10 years, receiving herbs, advice on personal problems and warm hugs. Possibly, one of the greatest gifts David has provided for our community is that he has created a sacred space where we can belong, be nourished and feel peace in our hearts. |
